YOUNG people who care for a sick or disabled relative are set to get more support with the launch of Doncaster’s first ‘young carer’s card’.

Carers and over 50 professionals from agencies across the town including schools, colleges, emergency services, hospitals and the council will be launching the scheme tomorrow at the Doncaster School and College for the Deaf from 2pm.

The card is believed to be the first in the UK that connects all local support agencies in support of young carers.

A ‘young carer’s card’ is carried by a young carer and can be shown to make agencies aware of their caring role and eligibility to support.

Young carers will be able to apply to their school or college in Doncaster for a card.

The brainchild of Barnardo’s Doncaster Young Carers Service, the scheme has been developed after consultation with young carers and their families.

South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Rotherham and Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust along with Doncaster Council are putting their weight behind the scheme.
