Construction work on Doncaster’s newest war memorial will begin within the next few weeks.

The Poppy and Celtic cross-style design will be built on land at the junction of Thorne Road and Eden Grove Road, Edenthorpe.

It was designed by schoolgirl Rebecca Liddle and will feature the names of six service personnel, all from the village, who were killed during the Second World War.

Just last week a donation of £200 was made to Edenthorpe War Memorial Committee (EWMC) by Honda.

Rosie Winterton MP, who is honorary president of the EWMC, said: “I’d like to thank Honda for their donation to what is an excellent project.

“The new memorial will recognise the people from Edenthorpe who died defending our freedom during the Second World War.”

There will be a dedication service at the site on October 6 conducted by reverend Mary Gregory. Members of the Armthorpe and District branch of the Royal British Legion will also attend.

The memorial has been made by Lidsters and will be complete by the end of September. EWMC members believe it is the first monument to be built in the area since the 1990s.
