VIDEO – The traditional Haxey Hood is a huge success

The 14th century tradition that is the Haxey Hood attracted hundreds of people for the traditional January 6 event.

It was all smiles at the Carpenter’s Arms, Westwoodside, when they took back possession of the prized hood after a nearly three hour marathon.

Up to 200 people fought it out at the start, but by 5.45pm, as the drizzle descended, it was back in the hands of the Carpenter’s Arms, who were last victors in 2011.

New Chief Boggin Phil Palmer said: “It was an honour. It was absolutely brilliant. It is something that you dream of. It has been a really special moment for me and everybody has been really supportive.”

The glorified mass scrum of the Hood – a tradition which goes back to mediaeval times, some would say even further - was played out between the villagers of Haxey and Westwoodside.
