CLERGY wife-to-be Hazel Trudgen is determined not to fit into the stereotypical mould of twinset and pearls, home-made jams and cakes.

For just weeks ahead of her wedding to Stainforth vicar Andrew Allington, Hazel took to the skies to take the first step towards fulfilling a life-long ambition to be a helicopter pilot.

Hazel had her first lesson on her 35th birthday under the expert tutelage of former jet provost air display pilot Eddie Todd.

“It was really good. There were 40 knot winds so it was quite exhilarating,” said Hazel, who marries the Vicar of Stainforth on July 9 in his parish church, St Mary’s.

On leaving Hatfield High School Hazel travelled the world, settling in Sydney, Australia, where she worked in the costume departments for the film and theatre industry, including on Star Wars Episode 2.

She was also a model appearing in Cosmopolitan magazine, a crew member on luxury cruise boats for the wealthy jet-set in Sydney Harbour, enjoyed extreme adventure sports and trained with the Australia Super Bike School.

Extreme sports fan Hazel, returned home to Dunsville when she was struck down by the debilitating condition ME.

She is using the private pilot training - which could take up to 60 lessons - to aid her recovery too.

“Doing something as big as learning to fly a helicopter gets me to focus on achieving it,” she said.

But her arrival for the wedding ceremony to be conducted by the outgoing Bishop of Doncaster, the Right Reverend Cyril Ashton, will be by a more sedate means of transport - horse and carriage.
