TV comic Johnny Vegas sings praises of Doncaster on Twitter

Comedian Johnny Vegas has sung the praises of Doncaster describing the town as “great” to his quarter of a million Twitter followers.

The television favourite, who has been fiming a new series of Still Open All Hours in the town over the past few weeks, took to social media to praise not just the town, but townsfolk and the area’s bars and restaurants too.

He wrote: “You know what, #doncasterisgreat Salt of the Earth folk, cracking banter, great bars and restaurants. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it x”

The star has been filming scenes for the new series of the cornershop sitcom with acting legend Sir David Jason as well as the likes of Tim Healy and Lynda Baron at the Beautique hairdressing salon on the corner of Lister Avenue and Scarth Avenue.

The shop was convereted into Arkwright’s cluttered emporium for filming which is due to draw to a close later today.

And Johnny has also praised Bawtry’s Crown Hotel where he and other stars of the rehashed comedy have been staying during the shooting.

He tweeted: “Huge THANKS to all the fantastic @crownbawtry team. Such a lovely gang who truly understand what hospitality means x. He also praised the hotel’s black toilet roll in his tweets.

During the filming, he has happily posed with fans for photographs, signing autographs and has been spotted at several local bars and restaurants during his stay.

Last year, he spent time drinking and chatting with regulars in the Tut ‘n Shive in West Laith Gate in Doncaster town centre.
Crown Hotel sales manager Katey Dent said: “Such an amazing bunch of people! They loved Bawtry, and were really happy to have photos with anyone who asked!

“Two series and both times have stayed at the Crown – looking forward to series 3 next year!”

The second series of the show is due to begin airing on BBC1 at Christmas.
