TEACHERS are in a race against time to find a box of 1980s treasures after forgetting where it was buried.
Staff at Mattersey Primary School buried a time capsule in 1989 to mark the silver jubilee of the school, which was due to be dug up in 2014.
But when the current staff starting planning to unearth it for their 50th anniversary celebration in two years time, it was revealed no one quite knew the box’s location.
Office manager Jane Grayson said: “We have a picture of it being buried and know it is on the lawn out the front but don’t know exactly where it is.
“We have had the headteacher who was here when the time capsule was buried out on the lawn with a metal detector but she couldn’t find anything.
“There was an extension built and we were worried that the box might be underneath it, but we don’t think that is the case any more.”
Staff are now appealing for anyone who went to the original burial celebration to come forward and help them track down the wooden box, filled with trinkets and school work from 1989.
Several former pupils, now in their 30s, have already come forward to try and help find the box, but an exact position is yet to be located.
It is hoped when the box is discovered it can be updated with objects from 2014 and reburied – although this time staff have said they will draw up a map and keep it somewhere secure for pupils in future years.
