They have been taking the plunge since the 1960s – but Doncaster’ Sub Aqua Club is running low as members decide to hang up their flippers.

The club, known as DSAC, is appealing for new members to join after a string of long-established members retired from the group.

Chairperson Linda Lawcock, aged 63, of Hatfield Woodhouse, said: “We are down to about 29 members as about 15 of our group decided to hang up their flippers in the last 18 months or so.

“We want to boost membership and it would be great to get some younger people or those who have never tried it before to come along and join in the fun.

“We can train people to an excellent standard and have been on diving trips all over the world.”

Linda added: “We have been up to Northumberland and down to the Red Sea in recent years. It is great fun and you always learn something new.”

The group was only the 75th diving club to form in the country when it established more than 50 years ago but there are now more than 2,000 clubs nationwide.

The DSAC meets at The Clubhouse in Greyfriars Road just outside the town centre. Members meet for pool training at Hall Cross School on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. The club also has its own boat and is licenced to train divers at Lakeside.

n Anyone interested in joining the group should register their interest first before attending any of the diving sessions. Contact training officer Ian Baker on 07775626916 for details.
