SLIDESHOW: Turned out ice again...

Waiting for Video...

Sledges were out in force and snowballing was the sport of the day when the Dearne had its first real snow of the winter over the weekend.

About three inches of snow fell overnight – but it was forecast and local authority gritters were prepared for it. Main roads were kept gritted and clear but residents stayed at home as side streets remained covered.

In Conisbrough, many pupils had an unexpected day off school, when the De Warenne Academy was closed for the day on Monday.

Headteacher Gill Pollard said: “Getting our staff to come in from far and wide was difficult. I couldn’t get enough teachers here to staff the school.

“To get pupils here to sit in the hall and have cover lessons would have been counter productive. I had to make a very complex decision with lots of factors to consider.”

Morley Place School, in Mexborough, Pennine View School in Conisbrough and Denaby Main Primary School also closed on Monday, but reopened on Tuesday.
