Royal seal of approval

COMPUTING students from Dearne Valley College received the royal seal of approval for setting up their own IT business.

Students who formed the DVCShareIT firm met with HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, during his recent visit to Rotherham.

They told the Prince about how they created their business and gave their thoughts on ideas for start-up companies.

Created by Computing Level 2 students, DVCShareIT provides a basic repair and upgrade service of desktop computers and laptops.

Students are now encouraging businesses and individuals to donate any unused, working computers.

The team will safely remove data in accordance with the Data Protection Act, in order to restore and re-sell to people in the area who are looking for a basic computer at a reasonable price.

Before getting started, group members considered all aspects of going into business from initial business case concepts, resources, code of conducts and risk assessments to the design of a project logo to be used on documents and as part of a dress code.

All work is carried out under the supervision of experienced college staff.

The venture is part of the Barnsley ‘Big Challenge’ enterprising project, which aims to help students gain additional qualifications, work experience and to provide a service in their community.

Computing and ICT Tutor Glynis Duckenfield said: “I’m really pleased with the effort, dedication and enthusiasm the students have shown towards the enterprise project.

“The business concept of the project will hopefully show the students what it takes to be competitive in today’s market, and gain them valuable work experience for the future.”

If anyone is interested in using the services of DVCShareIT or want to donate any unused, working computers for refurbishment, they are asked to contact Glynis on 01709 513333 or via email gduckenfield@dearne-coll.ac.uk

If you are interested in studying IT, the college is accepting applications for courses starting in September 2012.

For a Further Education Course Guide 2012/2013 call the Enquiry Line on 01709 513355, alternatively email learn@dearne-coll.ac.uk.

A Further open evening will take place at the college’s Manvers Campus on Tuesday, May 15, from 4.30pm onwards.
