Robin Hood Airport radar ‘fears’ over Owston Ferry wind turbine

PLANS for a wind turbine will go before planners for a second time amid fears that it could interfere with airport radars.
An application has been submitted to North Lincolnshire Council to build a 29 metre tall wind turbine on land at Newland Farm in Blackdyke Road, Owston Ferry, capable of producing 250Kw of electricity.
The plans were initially rejected in May this year due to fears the height and position of the turbine could cause interference with vital radar equipment at Robin Hood Airport.
In the resubmitted application, Stephen Catney, a business consultant acting on behalf of the land owners, states that under the advice of planners at the council the new proposed total turbine height has been lowered by six metres in a bid to work under the line of sight of the radar.
The turbine will also be placed on land in the corner of the family run farm and will have a substation to help process the energy created by the wind turbine.
Despite this Robin Hood Airport is still opposing the turbine.
An airport spokesperson commented, “It is a known fact that wind turbines located close to airports can impact on the airport’s radar equipment used to assist aircraft navigation, their take-off and landing.
“Due to the location of this particular wind turbine, this will impact on the radar equipment at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield and as a consequence the airport has objected to this planning application.
“There are some viable, proven ways to mitigate these issues, however to date none have been put forward by the developer.”
Other organisations, including the Civil Aviation Authority, Historic Environment Record Group, Ministry of Defence and Environment Agency, had no objections to the erection of the turbine, so long as a flood survey was completed before works started.
The council is still taking comments on the proposed turbines until November 8 and is expected to make a decision on the application by mid-December.
