PATIENTS who need rehabilitation after severe injuries are now being accepted for treatment at a new centre in Montagu Hospital.

People used to receive treatment at Tickhill Road Hospital, but from now on patients who need rehabilitation after falls, serious injury or illnesses other than a stroke will receive that care at Montagu Hospital or Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

The move is part of a scheme to open a dedicated rehabilitation facility at Montagu that will treat patients from across the region.

Tickhill Road Hospital will continue to accept new patients for stroke rehabilitation and care for all patients currently on its wards.

But more and more new patients will be accepted into Montagu in the run up to the rehabilitation centre’s opening in September.

Plans for the centre were granted by Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group in February following a heated public consultation in which some residents claimed the move was a way of “downgrading” Montagu Hospital.

But hospital bosses have always maintained converting some existing wards into the rehabilitation centre would benefit local patients.

Consultant Physician Dr Rod Kersh is clinical director for older people and rehabilitation at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

He said: “This is the first major step towards the opening of a new rehabilitation centre that will lead the way nationally for highly-specialist care catering to each patient’s individual recovery from serious injury or illness.

“When it opens, it will transform the way we approach rehabilitation in this region by providing intensive therapeutic care seven days a week in a real-life environment a world away from a traditional hospital ward.”

Dr Sam Feeney, from NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, added: “This is a tremendous step forward for the Doncaster area as we move closer to having a leading-edge rehabilitation centre on our doorstep, operating every day of the week.”

Following its opening in September the new centre will become the main rehabilitation centre for patients in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.
