Puppies abandoned in Epworth
Almost blind and helpless - these two abandoned puppies face an uncertain future after they were dumped in a taped-up cardboard box.
Julie Huntington of West End Road, Epworth, found the lurcher puppies left to their fate at the end of her street on Wednesday January 27.
Julie, 47, said: “I was taking my own dog for a walk when I saw a box at the end of the lane. It was made up of two crisp boxes put together, all taped up, with a gap at the bottom.
“I saw something start to move inside the box. It could have been anything and I decided to call the police just in case. By chance I was able to flag down a police car. When we opened the box we saw two lurcher or greyhound type puppies about eight to 12 weeks old. The dogs were lovely things, they had beautiful coats and were frightened but looked healthy. They couldn’t have been there very long.
“As an animal lover I can’t understand the mentality of anyone would do such a thing. They obviously put the box there to be found. The police put them in the back of the car and took them to the dogs home. I’m relieved they have been taken somewhere in safe hands where they will be looked after until they can be found a home. I wouldn’t want them to be hurt in any way.”
The dogs were taken to Sangreat Kennels at Scawby Brook near Brigg, which houses strays on behalf of North Lincolnshire Council.
Kennel owner Paul Greenfield, said: “You wouldn’t be able to print what I feel about the kind of people who would do something like this.
“We found out that the dogs are both suffering from juvenile cataracts and are almost blind - that may have been part of the reason they were dumped.”
Their condition is treatable and as we went to press Paul was waiting to see if the RSPCA can treat and rehome the siblings, thought to be from the same litter.
