Doncaster Police Supt Neil Thomas said: “We are seeing thefts of tools from workmen’s vehicles, particularly when they have been parked up and in car parks.

“It is a particular issue at the moment and we need to make sure that people are not leaving things in their cars or vans that can be stolen.

“We are going to do a lot of surveillance work in areas to deal with this.

“There will be overt patrols, and covert patrols too. Because of a number of issues, we currently have plain clothes officers operating at the moment.

“They will be on the look out for any break-ins.

“We also have both mobile and static cameras that we are using to take action against this problem.”

Officers are currently operating in plain clothes in the town centre alongside uniformed officers as officers try to both deter criminals with a visible presence, but to also catch any offenders unawares if they commit a crime thinking there is no police presence around.

Plain clothes officers have also been used by police as part of their crackdown on antisocial behaviour in the town, around the market, which officers believe has relieved the problem in that area,

Some incidents of thefts from vehicles have been reported by people who have been staying in hotels.

Police are also talking to managers at the borough’s hotels to help them also take action to make sure their guests are as safe as possible from thieves.

Suggestions which are being made have included measures such as improved lighting and closed circuit television cameras on their premises.
