People say a week is a long time in football and we have certainly felt the full force of that in the last seven days.
A week ago I was discussing with the squad about having three wins in the previous four games. There was a real positivity about the whole club.
Fastforward seven days and we’re talking about back-to-back defeats, disappointing performances and grumbles getting louder.
We’ve had two disappointing results, we know that, there’s no getting away from that fact.
But we also know that we’re not far away.
I take you back again, a week ago all the talk was about trying to kick on. We so very recently were doing it so we know we’re capable. We know that we have to get back on track with everything.
We’re only 11 league games into the season. We’ve got a couple of games in hand and if we win one of them we’re into midtable. We’re two points off the bottom four but we’re also on three points off the top half with two games in hand.
Every player won’t play well in every game. Every manager knows that.
When players are having an off day, you can afford three or four of them being off the pace because the rest will have the ability to carry them through and get the result.
It’s been a pattern this season that when one player has been off, there’s been another six or seven also off it. That makes it incredibly difficult to get a result.
On the flip side of this. When we’re on it, it seems like every player is performing rather than us just having six or seven to do the business for the team.
It is time for big characters to stand up, be counted and be relied upon to help us get the results.
I feel that we have added a real big character in Andy Butler who came in on loan from Sheffield United yesterday. He’s the type of player we have needed, a born leader.
The players will know when they have done something wrong because we will tell them. Believe you me they will know.
But it is also important to keep their confidence up and ensure they keep the belief.
It is no different whether you’re winning, losing or drawing games. You have to talk about belief and confidence because it is a major factor in what you do.
I believe in the players we’ve got here. We know we have to be better than we have been in the last two games but we also know that we can be and that we will be.
