A HAPPY couple celebrated 66 years of marriage at a party with family and friends.

Legay and Olive Shipley held a party at Oldfield House Residential Home in Oldfield Lane, Stainforth, to mark the milestone.

The couple met at a dance when Mr Shipley was 24 and his bride-to-be was 19.

Mr Shipley, 90, was originally a member of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry before enrolling in the Territorial Army.

The pair tied the knot on May 12, 1945, and were the first couple to wed in Stainforth’s St Mary’s Church after the Second World War.

But just only days later Mr Shipley had to return to Germany where he was stationed.

As a soldier he also fought in Italy, France and the Middle East.

Mrs Shipley, 86, worked throughout Dunscroft as a carer for the elderly.

The couple had three children, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Mrs Shipley now lives in Oldfield House and her husband in Fishlake.
