Post-natal celebrities would have us believe you can be back in your size ten skinny jeans weeks after giving birth but the reality is often very different.

Help is now on hand for Doncaster mums when it comes to shifting those post baby pounds thanks to a new support group.

Yummy Tummies is an innovative group run by specialist healthy lifestyle midwives, Carolyn Garland and Alison Williams, who are bringing their own experiences to help other mums.

From ‘buggy walks’ where babies can tag along, to sessions about nutrition, mums can also get the chance to make new friends through the group.

Carolyn said: “Mums themselves decide on the agendas and what topics they want to hear about, and we then liaise with Joanne Metcalfe, physical activity development officer for Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT), to make this happen.”

The innovative work by Carolyn and Alison has already helped to tackle high levels of maternal obesity linked to socio-economic deprivation.

Specialist healthy lifestyle midwives can also refer mums-to-be to Doncaster’s Exercise for Health scheme, provided by DCLT.

This means that after a one-to-one consultation with a gym instructor at Armthorpe Sports Centre, they are able to access the facilities at a reduced cost.

Following the consultation an appropriate programme is designed, specific to each individual’s needs, taking into consideration different abilities.

The Exercise for Health scheme can only be accessed by referral from a health professional, and is designed to increase confidence in physical activity for those aged 16 and over.

Yummy Tummies is held on Wednesdays at Armthorpe Sports Centre in Mere Lane, from 10.30am to 11am.

Between 11am and noon there is coffee, chat, and guest speakers talking about healthy topics alongside a midwife.

Contact the sports centre on 01302 834268 to book or for more information.
