A CONTRACTOR is leading the way in helping to buck the trend of church closures, by building a new one.
Despite other sites closing nationally, the Methodist Church in Hexthorpe is undergoing a huge redevelopment which has seen the aging 1960s style structure demolished to make way for a modern two storey building.
With the steel framework in place, Hexthorpe-based contractors Togel Construction is well on course to complete the new-look church by March 2013.
Plans include building a creche area, new kitchen and more space across two floors. Contemporary worship will be led by Rev John Hartley on the first floor.
Weekly activities will also be launched at the church in Urban Road for young people and there will be coffee mornings, craft sessions and a lunch club for older people held.
Richard Iball, senior church steward, said: “These new facilities will allow the work we do to be improved and for new activities to emerge. We know that new houses are planned in the area and we want to be ready to welcome new people.”
