Volunteers worked alongside waterways officials to clear rubbish from a litter strewn beauty spot.

Residents teamed up with representatives from the Canal & River Trust, Royal British Legion and the Swinton Lock Activity Centre for the clean-up around the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal between Mexborough and Swinton.

The group collected more than 50 bags of dumped litter from the site, including an old TV, hoover and carpet.

Mexborough man Sean Gibbons, 40, who helped to organise the event, said: “This was the second clean-up event of Mexborough canal area and we are planning on holding similar events every quarter.

“It is fantastic to see‎ so many volunteers come together across partner organisation and local residents with a common aim - to clean-up our town and make it a more enjoyable place to live, work and visit.”
