MP Ed Miliband is backing an appeal for more people to sign up to a life-saving donor register.

The Anthony Nolan charity wants people aged 16 to 30 to join their bone marrow register to help the fight against blood cancer.

It has been revealed that in Mr Miliband’s Doncaster North constituency there are already more than 382 people on the register.

Now he is appealing for more to sign up.

He said: “There are almost 400 people on the register in my own constituency, but the challenge continues and I’m asking for more volunteers from across Doncaster and beyond to sign up and help join the fight blood cancer.”

Anthony Nolan – now in its 40th anniversary year – was the world’s first bone marrow register.

Ann O’Leary, Head of Register Development at the charity, said: “We are delighted that Ed has been inspired to encourage others to sign up as donors. Donating is an incredibly selfless thing to do and will give someone with blood cancer their best chance at survival.”

Around 1,600 people in the UK have leukaemia and other blood cancers and are waiting for a transplant.
