Members of the town's thriving recovery community and their families celebrated continuing abstinence from drugs and alcohol at an open day held at the specialist detoxification unit in Balby.

The event was held at Aspire Drug and Alcohol Service’s New Beginnings unit on Marshall Avenue, which offers a comprehensive recovery programme to support people’s reintegration into the community.

It provides medically assisted programmes in a purpose built unit, which recently underwent a £35,000 refurbishment, offering the maximum amount of support for people aiming to achieve a drug and alcohol free lifestyle.

New Beginnings day programme manager Paul Wade said: “People living with addiction and their families are often stigmatised, so we invited the people from our local community to come in and join us to celebrate recovery and dispel some of the myths and stereotypes that can create some of the stigma.

“A number of our service users bravely spoke to the audience of visitors about their own experiences and demonstrated that it takes great courage to seek help, and real determination to follow the road to recovery. This event really proved what people can achieve with the right help and support from our services and the wider community.”

Aspire service manager Stuart Green, who spoke at the event added: “We offer a fully functional detoxification inpatient unit, staffed 24/7 by specialist nursing staff along with an integrated structured day programme, which means people are treated in the right environment where recovery can prosper and thrive.

“High quality facilities like ours play a crucial role in people’s recovery and as a consequence, are in increasing demand nationally. We’re keen to support recovery across the region and beyond, so we’ve decided to offer a limited number of inpatient detox beds to people outside of Doncaster.

“This event was all about opening our doors to the local community for them to come and see our outstanding facilities and celebrating the fantastic services we offer to support people in their recovery.”
