When bicycle thieves struck in Wheatley, a hardworking paperboy was left to continue his round on foot - until his generous customers came to the rescue.

Joe Maith, aged 14, who lives in Wheatley Hills has worked for Smith’s Newsagents on Becket Road for just over a year.

One day, as he went to a customer’s door to make a delivery, his bike was stolen.

Newsagent, and Joe’s boss, Steve Maxwell said: “Joe came back and told us what had happened and soon enough all of his customers found out too.

“We all agreed to have a whip round for him to raise enough money to get him a new bike.”

Around 25 Wheatley residents digged deep and offered their support, raising well over £200 for Joe.

The cash was used to purchase a brand new set of wheels for him.
