A new project will see Doncaster people with mental and emotional health problems given support by volunteers who have experienced and overcome similar difficulties.

Doncaster Council and NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have jointly awarded a two-year contract to run a borough-wide peer support training service to the Intake-based People Focussed Group (PFG) Doncaster.

PFG Doncaster, based at The Wellness Centre on Montrose Avenue, has over 200 members who provide support to each other, ranging from practical assistance around the home to a listening ear.

Doncaster PFG’s role will be to provide peer support development and training programmes for groups across Doncaster.

The aim is to create a ripple effect, with PFG members recruiting, training and supporting local groups who in turn will provide peer support to people within their community. The project was officially launched yesterday. Doncaster PFG Director, Kelly Hicks, said: “We are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to embed peer support training across Doncaster borough.
