A diabetic who was told by medics he would be dead by 40 if he did not change his lifestyle has credited military fitness classes with saving his life.

Dean Lawton, 36, has lost nearly six stone in a year with the help of the boot camp style MFT outdoor fitness classes and now says he feels ready for anything.

Dean is now training at the Doncaster based MFT classes four times a week and says he feels like a different person.

Dean who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in July of last year and suffers from sleep apnoea that causes breathing problems during sleep realised he needed to take drastic action after visiting his doctor.

He said: “The doctor basically said if you don’t give yourself a kick up the bum and change your life you’ll be dead by 40.

“It was a massive shock to hear him say that and I realised I needed to take action.”

That same night Dean, of Wheatley Hall Road, saw a sign for the MFT classes and signed up.

Nearly a year on Dean has gone from 21 stone 2lbs to 15 stone 8lbs.

He said: “I can’t thank the team at MFT enough, my trainer Ian Burkitt has helped keep me motivated and I couldn’t have done it without him.

“Every time I go to a class I say thank you to him for changing my life, he’s given me the confidence to carry on.

“He always says to me don’t thank me you’ve done this yourself but I couldn’t have done it without the support from him and all the guys at MFT.

“The classes are tough and there was a time after the first few sessions where I wondered if I’d stick to it.

“A lot of people doubted that I could do it but I wanted to stick with it.

“I’ve always struggled with my weight and I’ve tried going to the gym and different diets but I’ve never been able to stick to anything.

“With the classes you have someone there motivating you.

“When I go to see my dietician she can’t believe how much weight I’ve lost, I’ve got so much energy now, I feel great.

“I’ve noticed a massive improvement in my health with both my diabetes and sleep apnoea and I feel so much better in my self, a lot more confident too.

“A year ago I wouldn’t have thought this would have been possible.”
