This picture of burly blokes could be a rugby team photo.

However, this collection of sporting gents are devotees of an unusual pursuit . . . tug-of-war.

The picture shows members of the Owston Ferry based team with yet another of their trophies in the early 1980s.

This is the latest snap in a photo album kindly lent to us by former team coach Alan Parkin.

We have been featuring pictures of the team in action over the past several weeks, and the one above shows them proudly displaying a competition shield they won.

The team used to travel the length of the country to take on other teams.

Mr Parkin, 62, of Parklands, West Butterwick, said: “The team ran between about 1968 and 1980.

“We all used to meet in a pub in Epworth and then back in Owston Ferry, and the idea just came about from that over a few drinks. It got really popular, really quickly.

We used to train in this old Dutch barn just outside of Owston Ferry.

“We filled a 50 gallon drum with bits of metal and tools, things like that and the lads had to pull it past a certain point.

“It was a lot of fun.”
