HISTORIAN Douglas Wydell has won a 14-month campaign to get a 300-year-old building protected from development.
Beech House, on Melton High Street, West Melton, has been granted Grade Two listed status by English Heritage.
Mr Wydell, 62, who was born in West Melton, said: “It is a building of historical significance to the area.
“The listed status means it will be protected from any major changes or development.
“The character of the building will remain the same. I’m pleased English Heritage have recognised this.”
Mr Wydell claims his research shows the building dates back as far as 1725.
The private residence belonged for many years to the Smiths of West Melton, a well known family of shopkeepers.
Mr Wydell also attempted to get listed status for Beech Farm and Montoir Farm, but both applications were denied.
