It was birthday cake all round as Connie Lodge celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends.

The fiercely independent mother of one was also pleased to receive well wishes from the Queen in the form of a birthday card congratulating her on the milestone occasion.

Mrs Lodge is currently a residents at Positive Steps in Tickhill Road, Balby, but up until a recent hospital stay lived in her own home in Scawsby.

Family friend Sandra Handley said: “She is a very kind, calm lady and very independent. She has one son and many, many friends.

“I’ve known Connie since I was eight-year’s-old, she was my neighbour.

“Connie is very excited to celebrate her birthday and I think it’s something all the other residents are looking forward too.”

Mrs Lodge has lived life to the full and worked in the accounts department at a clothing factory in Leeds for his first job.

She married husband Kenneth on May 31, 1937, in Wakefield, before moving to Scawsby.

After her husband died in 1983 she lived on her own.

Mrs Handley said: “Connie said she has always been as independent as she can be. She loves gardening and reading and believes the secret to her long life is everything in moderation and being kind to others.”

Mrs Lodge’s son David was also by his mum’s side to join in the celebrations.
