A new partnership has been launched to increase opportunities for school pupils in Doncaster to play tennis in the local community.

It will see a new community tennis programme introduced on the school courts at Trinity Academy, in Thorne.

Academy students have been restricted to playing the sport in PE lessons only.

Thanks to the unique new partnership between Trinity Academy, Wheatley Hills Tennis Club, South Yorkshire Sport and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), people of all ages in Thorne will now have the opportunity to play tennis within their local community.

Myles Collett, head tennis coach for the programme, said, “This is a fantastic development for tennis in Thorne. The tennis programme on the school courts will have something for everyone from tots to veterans and beginners to experienced players.”

A coaching programme is being developed so youngsters can learn the basics through mini tennis and teenagers can improve their skills.

Myles added: “The tennis programme at Trinity Academy is brand new, so we’re happy to develop sessions that local people want. If adults want coaching then we can put on a session, if cardio tennis is more popular then we’ll put a session on. ”

Laura Allen, development officer at South Yorkshire Sport, said: “The Academy students have been playing and enjoying tennis in PE lessons and during the school team for some time now.

“But, unfortunately, with no tennis club in the local vicinity, the young people were restricted to school based tennis and didn’t have anywhere to develop their skills and passion for the sport.

“With Wimbledon set to dominate our TV screens is a great time to be launching this fantastic new partnership which will expand opportunities to play in the local community and increase participation.”

Trinity Academy will be hosting a free fun session as part of the Great British Tennis Weekend on Saturday, 21 June, from 1pm to 4pm.
