Doncaster couple killed in Florida holiday crash

Terence and Dawn Marie Milsom were tragically killed when their motorbike collided with a pick-up truck towing a boat as they travelled back to their holiday villa in Key Colony Beach, Marathon, Florida.

The court heard the couple of Sunnyside, Edenthorpe had decided to go out for one last ride on the bike before taking it back to the rental company.

Mr Milsom’s brother and his wife, who were holidaying with the couple, were travelling on a motorbike some distance behind when they heard the crash.

A statement read out from Mr Milsom’s sister-in-law, Jillian, said: “We had been out for a meal, it was the last night we had the bikes and we wanted to have a last ride.” Speaking about the crash she said: “I didn’t see it, I just heard the crash and heard my husband scream.”

Motorbike valetor Mr Milsom, aged 57, and secretary Mrs Milsom, 50, were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash just before 9pm on October 27 last year.

The court heard Mr Milsom was riding the bike with Mrs Milsom as a passenger when they were preparing to make a left-hand turn.

Pick-up truck driver Carla Elizondo was travelling in the opposite direction.

As the motorbike attempted to turn left it collided with the pick-up truck.

In a statement read out from Ms Elizondo, she said she was travelling below the 45mph speed limit through a green light when the bike cut in front of her.

“I remember slamming my brakes on and hitting them,” she said.

Toxicology results for Mr Milsom were negative.

A post mortem result revealed Mr and Mrs Milsom both died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries.

Coroner Fred Curtis concluded the couple had died as a result of a road traffic collision.

He added: “It is a sad matter that a holiday which I’m sure gave considerable pleasure should end in this very tragic way.” An investigation by Florida Highway Patrol found no crime had been committed and no charges were filed in relation to the collision.”
