Wombwell and Darfield MP Michael Dugher has backed calls for a new law to ensure the justice system works better for witnesses and victims of crime.
A Victims’ Taskforce has been established to lead work on a Victims’ Law to look at ways of improving the way victims of crime are treated by the criminal justice system.
Mr Dugher said: “For too long victims of crime have lacked confidence in our criminal justice system. I think it is about time that this was addressed.”
The taskforce will look at the detail of what a victims’ law should include and are to present their report to MPs in November.
Issues they will tackle include how victims and witnesses are kept informed about the status of the investigation of the crimes against them, how they are treated within the court and how people are kept informed about their perpetrators release.
