Police divers this afternoon recovered the body a young man who went missing while swimming in a Doncaster lake last night.

Emergency services were called to the old quarry off Hurst Lane, Auckley, just after 9pm when the 27-year-old’s friends reported him missing.

The former sand and gravel quarry is full of water and is said to be ‘extremely deep’.

A police spokesman said eight young men from the Rossington area had gone swimming and crossed the lake but realised that one of them had not got out of the water.

Police and fire crews rushed to scene and the fire service sent their water rescue unit, while the police helicopter hovered overhead with a spotlight as dusk descended. Police also set up ground lights to illuminate the scene.

The police spokesman confirmed there was no suggestion of foul play and the death was being treated as an ‘unfortunate accident’ involving a swimmer who got out of his depth.

The body was found about three metres below the surface and death was certified at 2.10pm.

None of the other seven young men needed medical attention and they have provided statements to officers.

The man is not being named until formal identification has taken place.
