The Mayor’s Big Power Switch has been named as one of the top 10 communications campaigns nationally.
Doncaster Council won a Gold in the Public Sector Communications Excellence Awards, organised by the Government Communications Service and LGCommunications at an awards ceremony in Manchester.
Some of the entries in the competition were worldwide campaigns with budgets running to tens of millions of pounds but The Big Power Switch campaign budget was just £4,500 - which was externally funded.
More than 1,000 households registered for the Mayor’s Big Power Switch when it was introduced earlier in the year and those who made the switch saved an average of £209 with a few households saving more than £500 thanks to the scheme.
The idea behind The Big Power Switch is simple – by coming together to buy energy, households can get a better deal. The more households who join the scheme, then the more bargaining power we will have when negotiating with the energy providers.
Mayor Ros Jones said: “This was a very tough competition with over 100 entries from local and central government as well as other public sector bodies nationally. To win is a huge achievement and I would like to congratulate the team.
“I am delighted that we have been able to work so effectively in the best interests of local residents, saving hard pressed families over £80,000 on their energy bills.”
Households who have registered for the second round of the Mayor’s Big Power Switch will be told exactly how much they could save on their bills from next week and will have until July 21 to decide if they want to make the switch.
