A children’s play area has become a no go zone for young families after arsonists set fire to equipment and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Residents hit out at yobs for setting fire to equipment and ripping up safety flooring at the Victoria Park site in Mexborough at about 10pm on Monday.
There have also been reports of teenage gangs of up to 15 gathering there to take drugs and drink alcohol during the evenings.
The play area, once popular with young families, was closed off while council workmen carried out repairs and reopened on Tuesday afternoon.
Father-of-two Sean Gibbons, 40, who lives across from the site on Park Road, said: “The play area is in an absolutely diabolical state because of these mindless thugs.
“My wife actually went out to try and put this latest fire out. We have also seen them smoking cannabis on there, but if you say anything to them all you get is abuse back from them.
“The fire has caused a lot of damage and they have ripped up the flooring as well. There is also an abundance of litter and dog mess.”
A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said firefighters from Cudworth Station spent 20 minutes putting the blaze out, which is thought to have been started deliberately.
