Ambitious plans have been proposed to transform a derelict Dearne nightsopt into a cinema and theatre complex.

The scheme involves reopening the Majestic Suite in Mexborough as a complex for showing films and hosting performing arts events.

Project leaders On Track, an organisation made up of Dearne youngsters and youth workers, claim this will help breathe new life into the town centre.

Co-ordinator Jill Arkley Jevons, 61, of Adwick Road, Mexborough, said: “It is a landmark building and has been sat derelict for some time. There are a lot of people in Mexborough who would like to see it redeveloped.

“This will bring more people into the town and it would be great for the young people to get involved with.”

The group formed the concept for the scheme in December and they are due to hold another meeting later this month to decide how to move the project forward.

The building was a popular snooker hall and events venue for many years but has seen phases of closures in the last couple of years.

Jill added: “We hope to meet with the owners and from there we will formulate a business plan and look at applying for funding to make it a reality.”
