A class with a difference for Denaby school pupils

Less-active youngsters are being encouraged to get into shape and boost their self-esteem at specialist after school clubs.

The sessions are aimed at primary school age boys and girls who are not joining in other sports clubs and involve everything from cheerleading to boxing.

Extra health-orientated activities are taking place in schools across Doncaster as it emerged that a third of Doncaster’s Year 6 pupils are classed as overweight.

The sporting scheme is being delivered by a company called Active Fusion through the Change4Life programme to encourage a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Lindsy James, partnership director at Active Fusion, said the overall aim is to ensure the next generation lead healthier lifestyles.

The 36-year-old, of Rotherham, said: “We are trying to get those kids who are not taking part in sport or any other out of school club into a more active environment.

“We look at who is not doing anything out of school and ask them and show them what we could do and if they want to participate.

“We have had only good feedback so far.”

The programme involves working with teachers to deliver weekly after school activity sessions and has already been rolled out to more than 20 primary schools across the borough.

One of the schemes currently running at Denaby Main Primary School sees a group of about 25 girls take part in fun sporty activities every Friday afternoon.

The ‘Go Girls’ are put through their paces in combat games, such as hitting pads with boxing gloves on and practicing cheerleading routines.

The project comes as figures from Public Health England show 33.6 per cent of Doncaster’s Year 6 pupils were classed as being overweight in 2012/13, while 19.1 of these were obese. In total, 2, 829 pupils were measured.

Ms James added: “Projects like ours are helping to tackle the issue. But it is not just about weight loss, we teach youngsters about healthy eating. It’s also about bringing children who are less active with after school clubs into the fold to boost confidence.”
