A DENABY dog lover is to head a husky train of more than 100 dogs across the Humber bridge, to help children with cancer.

What began as a whisker of an idea between Zoe Quinlan of Old Denaby and her friend Faye Bailey of Goole, was collared on to by scores of other husky owners and together they hope to raise a pile of cash.

The daring stunt is planned for December 30. Dogs will use the side footways between 10am and 2pm, and the main roadway will remain open.

Zoe, 32, and her Siberian huskies Storm and Ice will be joined by Rachel Clarke of Rawmarsh with her husky Onyx, and friends from Conisbrough and Wath.

Television cameras will follow the dogs and owners as they trail four miles, both ways across the 156 metre-high majestic bridge for Ruddi’s Retreat - a charity that arranges holidays for sick kids and their families.

Zoe, of Denaby Lane, said: “The whole thing really took off due to social networking.

“Husky owners tend to keep in touch and it all blew up very quickly once the idea caught on.

“It’s become a huge organisational feat but it’s exciting to do and hopefully will raise a lot of money for a good charity.”

The owner with the most sponsor money will receive a husky tattoo, executed by Zoe’s husband David, a tattooist of some 22 years’ experience at his Body Art Tattoo Studios in Rotherham.

Zoe has already paid one trip to the Humber Bridge with her dogs for a recce and photo shoot.

“It’ll be brillant we hope,” she said. “And we hope that in the future we might be able to make this an annual event, perhaps for a different charity each year.”

All proceeds will go to Ruddi’s Retreat, inspired by Huddersfield youngster Ruddi Waterworth-Jones www.ruddisretreat.org/
