Youth centre’s future is secure
FEARS for the future of Crowle Youth Centre are totally unfounded it has been revealed this week.
In last week’s Bells/Advertiser we reported on the recent Crowle and Ealand Town Council meeting when the club’s acting project worker Pat Cooper told members that she believed North Lincolnshire Council was set to withdraw its funding for the facility - which has been running for some 50 years.
She urged the grass roots authority to support the centre, which is currently used by up to 40 youngsters, aged between 11 and 19, on three nights of the week, which costs about £25,000 a year to run.
Following our report, Isle MP Andrew Percy met with Councillor Rob Waltham, who is NLC’s cabinet member for youth services, in Crowle to discuss these concerns about the future of youth services in the town.
Mr Percy said: “I brought Rob to the town to meet with me to respond to some of the concerns that have been raised.
“I wanted to discuss the council’s review of Youth Services and I was reassured by what I heard.
“Coun Waltham explained that the council had recently engaged in an extensive consultation with young people, aimed at ensuring that youth services are more responsive to their needs.
“He also assured me that the council is not cutting the budget and he also gave me assurances about the youth club.”
He added: “North Lincs Conservative Council has taken the very sensible step of cutting councillors’ allowances and senior management, in order to protect local services.”
Coun Waltham added: “There is absolutely no question of Crowle Youth Club closing or the budget being cut.
“We have undertaken a consultation with young people in Crowle, they tell us the youth service they want needs to be provided on a Friday and Saturday evening and improved in the summer holidays.
“Now we are developing our proposals so we can properly meet the needs of young people in the Crowle area.”
