WORK has started to restore old copies of the Epworth Bells dating back more than 100 years.

Hundreds of issues dating back to the late 19th century are being rebound and put into the correct order at Epworth Mechanics Institute Library.

The mechanics has had to raise 10 per cent of the £7,000 costs with North Lincolnshire Council providing a £6,300 grant.

Volunteer Christine Pledger, 56, of Sandtoft Road, Belton, said: “We are happy that the work has now started and it will take a number of months to complete.

“It is important to preserve these copies as a historical document for years to come.

“They were in a poor state and in danger of being lost forever.”

Money has been raised for the scheme in a number of ways, including a quiz in which residents were asked to enter before Christmas.

The closing date for the quiz is tomorrow, the same date of the library’s annual general meeting.

The AGM takes place in the small hall of The Imperial Hall from 7.30pm. Members will be asked to votes on proposed changes to the rules and constitution of the institute.

The secretary will give a report on events of the past year and looking forward to the next 12 months. All members are encouraged to attend and participate in the proceedings.

For more details or information please contact the Secretary Mrs Christine Pledger on 01427 871502.
