A WOMAN has been fined a total £125, and has resigned from her job, after being caught serving to underage customers.

Officers from the Hoyland Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out a test purchase operation at a store in Darfield on December 14 last year.

The manager of the shop sold alcohol to a person aged under 18 who was working under the direction of South Yorkshire Police.

On January 28 this year a 52-year-old woman from Barnsley was convicted of selling alcohol to persons under 18 at Barnsley Magistrates Court and was fined £75 and required to pay a further £50 in court costs. The woman has also now resigned from her position as store manager.

Police Constable Craig Sumpter said: “Let this message be clear to all shopkeepers and licensees. South Yorkshire Police will ensure compliance with the law in this particularly important area.

“Licences to sell alcohol bring with them an important responsibility, namely not to sell alcohol to a person under 18.

“Police in Barnsley have worked hard at tackling anti-social behaviour fuelled by alcohol and we will maintain our vigilance.”
