VIDEO: RAF helicopter helps recover body from River Don
A DRAMATIC operation to recover a man’s body from the River Don was successfully completed with the help of an RAF helicopter crew.
The complex recovery involved police officers, firefighters, the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Search and Rescue team and the Environment Agency working together to retrieve the corpse, which was first spotted on Sunday evening at Sprotbrough Falls, near the Boat Inn.
Detectives battled against high water levels and treacherous conditions as they tried to assess the best way to retrieve the body after it travelled upstream to the bottom of the weir near Marshgate on Monday.
The Sea King helicopter spent about 15 minutes hovering over the bridge, near to HMP Doncaster, at about 6.30pm yesterday as a crew member worked to untrap the body from the surrounding debris.
Detective Chief Inspector Craig Robinson, of Rotherham CID, praised the efforts of all the emergency service crews who had worked ‘tirelessly’ over the two-day operation.
He said: “It was a successful operation in that we recovered the body safely. It was thanks to the RAF and all the other teams who participated in the rescue.”
The body has not yet been identified.
