Top British band pays tribute to drum tech Scott

RADIOHEAD have led the tributes to a Doncaster man who was killed when a stage roof collapsed on him during their Canada tour.

Scott Johnson, 33, was a drum technician and had worked with a number of top bands including Keane and White Lies.

Toronto police officers said the stage was being set-up on Saturday when the top part of it collapsed on top of him.

Radiohead released a statement on their official website which read: “We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague.

“He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny, a highly-skilled and valued member of our great road crew.

“We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott’s family and all those close to him.”

Ian West, Mr Johnson’s drum teacher in Doncaster, said his former pupil toured the world with famous bands.

He said: “It was a very, very big shock. He was a great student and a great drummer. He got a lucky break and made the most of it, he never looked back.

“The list of bands he worked with was endless, his CV had every band worth their salt on it, a lot of British bands and world class bands.”

Scores of tributes have been left on popular Scott’s Facebook page.

Clive Deamer said: “I would like to add my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Scott.

“Everyone of us in the Radiohead entourage are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic loss of our friend. We all miss him terribly.”

Hana Rae Charlesworth added: “What a guy!! Scott, it was a pleasure to have you in my life. So so many fond memories of the guy who took me on my one and only ever Donny date. We had some fab times. You really were one of life’s gems. My love and thoughts go out to your family. You’re going to be missed so much. all my love Hana xxxx”

The Foreign Office confirmed that Mr Johnson’s family had been notified.

Three other people were injured, one seriously, following the incident which happened around 4pm local time (8pm) at Downsview Park.

Detectives are investigating the incident.
