Super swim for stroke charity

A BIG-HEARTED schoolgirl is taking on a swimming challenge to benefit stroke victims after her grandad died from the condition.

Aimee Lunn, 11, will attempt to swim one mile – 64 lengths of the pool at Wath Leisure Centre - in memory of grandad Geoffrey who died aged 60 in 2007.

The Brampton Ellis Junior School pupil was very close to the former Cortonwood pit manager and wants to raise money for the staff at The Stroke Unit at Rotherham Hospital who treated him.

Aimee’s mum Michaela, 36, of Browning Road, Wath-upon-Dearne, said: “She was really close to her grandad and was only six when he died.

“As it is coming up to five years since he died she really wanted to do something to mark it.

“He was fit and healthy but had an irregular heartbeat which he didn’t know about and led to a stroke.

“He died ten days later and it came as a total shock to us all.”

She added: “Aimee absolutely loves swimming.

“She had lessons when she was younger and got a few badges for distances she achieved, but nothing like a mile.

“She has recently joined a swimming club at Hoyland Leisure Centre and is a much stronger swimmer now. Her technique has improved and she’s like a fish now!

Mrs Lunn added her daughter is not underestimating the challenge ahead of her.

She said: “Aimee knows it will be difficult but is also really looking forward to it.

“I’m so proud of her, to do something like this at her young age fills me with pride.

“She wants to raise as much money as possible.

“Anyone who can offer support or donations please get in touch with us.

“We are grateful for any help people can give and it is all going to an excellent cause very close to us.”

Aimee will be cheered on by family members when she attempts her challege on Sunday, July 8.

Anyone who would like to sponsor her can contact the family by email at kaylajlunn@gmail.com
