Students win position of influence

TWO community-minded students are aiming to give young people a greater say on life in in the borough after being elected to an influential group.

Marina Petriv and Ellie Williams – both students at Trinity Academy in Thorne – have joined the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council's Youth Student Council.

The girls are hoping to make a genuine difference to the quality of life in Thorne and Moorends after securing the coveted roles.

They join other youngsters from across the borough in making up the council, with the opportunity to air their views on issues ranging from health and transport to education and crime.

Ellie, 16, who represents Thorne, and Marina 15, of Moorends, attend regular community meetings to consider the quality of youth facilities in the area.

They have recently spoken to social workers as part of their induction to the local authority and will take part in a team-building course with fellow students in the new year.

Marina and Ellie confirmed their places on the council following an election process that involved schools throughout the Doncaster area.

Ellie said: "Being a youth councillor is great. It gives us an opportunity to influence decisions that are made and ensure that young people's voices are heard."

Marina added: "We get an input into many aspects of life in the local area and we are really excited about the challenges ahead."

Trinity Academy Principal Ian Brew said: "It is wonderful to see two of our students making a positive impact not only at school, but also in the wider community.

"Marina and Ellie are proving to be tremendous ambassadors for the Academy and we wish them every success in their work as youth councillors."
