POLITICALLY aware students took the chance to give councillors a grilling on a range of issues as part of a Question Time style meeting.

Sixth form pupils at Wath Comprehensive School put local politicians on the spot on local and national topics, including youth unemployment, tuition fees and the state of the economy.

Councillors Alan Atkin, Labour, Joe Otten, Liberal Democrats, Chris Middleton, Conservative, and Richard Penycate, a member of the Green Party, all made up the panel.

Head boy Ashley Bennett, 17, chaired the meeting, with head girl Alysha Careless, 17.

Ashley, of Wath, said: “It was a great way for us to learn about modern politics and debate issues that important to young people.

“They came up with some interesting answers and the debate was quite heated.”

Coun Atkin, of Wath, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed it. We tackled a range of topics and I was impressed with the questions the students came up with.

“This generation of politicians is getting older and we need more young people to get involved in the democratic process. Events like this help to promote that message.”
