Street name is changed after residents’ anger
A HOUSING development with exactly the same name as a street less than half a mile away is to be given a new name after residents’ anger.
Home owners living in Meadow Walk, Edenthorpe, were up in arms after a housebuilder in the village announced plans to create a new estate – also called Meadow Walk.
Protests began after signs to the new housing estate were put up just a stone’s throw from their properties.
Resident Ron Hill, who has lived in the original Meadow Walk since it was built 25 years ago, said the naming duplication would lead to chaos and confusion for delivery drivers, the postal service and the emergency services.
He said: “How can you have two streets with the same name in the same village, half a mile away from each other?
“We’ve already had an articulated lorry in the street which ended up at the wrong Meadow Walk and it’s only going to get worse unless something is changed quickly.”
Mr Hill’s Meadow Walk is part of a series of streets built in the late 1980s around the Tesco supermarket and The Eden Arms pub.
The new development, accessed off Church Balk, is on the other side of the supermarket with temporary yellow road signs already erected on nearby Thorne Road directing househunters and contractors to the new street.
But a spokesman for Leeds-based developer Harron Homes said moves were now in place to change the name.
She said: “We are aware of the situation and we have agreed to change the site name.”
A spokesman for Doncaster Council said a new proposed name had been received for the street – Hollyfield Crescent – and this was the name that was set to be adopted, although it would be some time before signs would be in place.
