A MOTORIST has been spared jailed after admitting starting a high speed chase.

Lee Hempstock, 27, was involved in a chase along Thorne Road and Armthorpe Lane in the early hours of July 4.

He admitted dangerous driving and driving over the alcohol limit, and said he panicked when he saw a police car signalling him to pull over.

Instead he accelerated to 60 miles per hour in a 30 zone, before losing control, crashing and abandoning the vehicle and his injured friend.

He was spared jail after the court heard how his retired father was prepared to drive him for his business and as he was only slightly over the drink drive limit.

Hempstock, of Scunthorpe, was sentenced to 10 months jail, suspended for two years, 180 hours of unpaid work, 12 months supervision and a three year driving ban.
