Sign up to library protest
RESIDENTS are being urged to attend a peaceful protest this Saturday opposing plans to close Moorends Library.
Campaign group Save Doncaster Libraries is staging a read-in between 1pm and 3pm and wants people to join it.
Doncaster Council has announced proposals to reduce the number of libraries in the borough from 26 to 12 as part of cost cutting measures.
The authority predicts the move could save more than £1.3 million annually.
The read-in will take place at Doncaster Central Library in Waterdale, Doncaster town centre.
So far more than 4,000 residents have signed a petition against the plans. If 10,000 people out their names down the authority will be forced into a public debate over the issue.
A campaign group spokesman said: “The closure of the majority of Doncaster’s libraries, may of which are in deprives parts of town with poor quality of life and low educational attainment, is not the way to serve the community.”
