SEVEN people - including a pregnant woman and a child - had to be rescued when fire broke out in a block of flats.

Fire crews mounted the resuce operation in Hirst Gate, Mexborough, last night after bins were deliberately set alight in the basement of the building.

Officers were called to the block of flats at 9.30pm after smoke from the blaze spread to the apartments.

All of the occupants were led to safety with the woman, in her 30s, taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary as a precaution but all were allowed back home before midnight.
