School is improving under action plan

A DEARNE secondary school has improved since an action plan was put in place to improve teaching standards, according to an Ofsted report.

Inspectors rated Wath Saint Pius X Catholic High School as ‘Satisfactory’ - the second lowest possible - after a visit in October last year and said teaching must be brought up to scratch.

Since then the school has implemented an action plan to help teachers focus their efforts on the individual needs of pupils.

The school has also appointed a new maths teacher and two new member have joined the governing body.

Ofsted inspector Joan Hewitt visited in January for a monitoring inspection and found numerous improvements at the school.

She said: “Senior leaders and governors have begun to take effective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the recent inspection.

“Teaching in mathematics has been strengthened by a new appointment. The school has rightly focused its priorities on improving teaching.

“In particular senior leaders have led staff in improving the way they use information about students’ progress to plan lessons.”

She added that teachers are now tailoring lessons more to suit students’ individual needs.

Staff have also received additional training to help them come up with interesting questions in lessons to keep students challenged.

However, the inspector also identified areas for improvement in the action plan.

She recommended that the senior management team monitors more closely the impact of teachers’ professional development on classroom performance.

Senior managers were also advised to make it clear to teachers what standards were expected.

Headteacher Tony Bishop was unavailable for comment this week.
