A MEXBOROUGH primary school was left badly smoke damaged after an arson attack in the early hours of this morning.

Arsonists struck at Windhill Primary School at about 1am.

They set fire to soft flooring on a play ground which caused a window to smash and smoke poured into the school.

Firefighters from Dearne Station were tackling a bin fire close to the school when they noticed the flames.

The crew rushed to the scene and spent over an hour putting the blaze out.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “The fire did not spread to the school building but it caused considerable smoke damage.

“It is believed the fire was started deliberately.”

Meanwhile at 1.15am a burning wheelie bin was shoved up against the door of a community centre in Coniston Court causing damage to the door and guttering.

Nobody was injured in either incident.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson, police said.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to either arson attack to call police on 101.
