RESIDENTS in Mexborough have called for pest controllers to investigate an alleged rat infestation which they say is blighting the town centre.

A public meeting at the Mexborough Resource Centre on Thursday heard that the rodents have been spotted around a number of public areas near the High Street, including the bus station, library and post office.

On one occasion a rat is said to have caused a panic when it ran through the legs of passengers waiting at the bus station.

Frank Knapton MBE, 76, honorary president of Mexborough Community Partnership, has now reported the problem to Doncaster Council on behalf of a number of residents.

He said: “It has been a long standing problem for the last couple of months I have been told and people obviously have health concerns.

“Someone told me a rat ran across people’s feet as they were waiting at the bus station, which caused quite a stir.

“They’ve also been seen on the road that runs alongside the library. One woman said a rat had been seen around the post office too.”

A spokesman for Mexborough Main Street Post Office said: “It was reported to us that a rat had been seen outside the entrance but this was an isolated incident.”

A librarian said a customer had spotted the rodents outside and a spokesman for Mexborough Interchange said it was also aware of the problem.

Peter Dale, Doncaster Council’s director of environment, advised people to ring the authority’s contact centre on 01302 736000 if they saw rats and the department would deal with the issue.
